Max Claudet Hand Painted Terracotta Pottery Wall Plate
Max Claudet Hand Painted Terracotta Pottery Wall Plate
A beautiful French terra-cotta wall plate / charger from the 19th century. The hand painted displays, in relief, a view of Salins les Bains.
It has been signed by the famous French artist: Max Claudet.
Max Claudet, born August 18, 1840 in Fécamp and died May 28, 1893 in Salins-les-Bains , is a French sculptor and ceramist, active in Salins-les-Bains. His wife, Julie Besson, whom he married in 1879, introduced him to ceramics through her contacts with the earthenware workshops installed in Salins since 1857. He perfected his own techniques by working with the Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne earthenware factory and created numerous enameled pieces (dishes, enameled plates, decorative objects, vases) which earned him the title of "Palissy comtois".
He exhibited regularly at the Salon de Paris from 1864 onwards and gradually became an artistic figure in the region.
His works can be found in public collections in the Jura but especially in Salins-les-Bains where a museum bears his name.
Overall good antique condition with some normal signs of ages.
