Beautiful antique solid silver photo locket pendant, designed in the Art Nouveau style and most likely made in France in the early 20th century, circa 1900.
This lovely piece stands out for the quality and delicacy of its silverwork. The circular photo compartment is surrounded by an elaborate openwork design depicting stylized mistletoe branches, with graceful elongated leaves and small rounded berries.
The flowing botanical lines and naturalistic movement of the design are wonderfully characteristic of the Art Nouveau aesthetic.
Mistletoe was a popular decorative motif during the Art Nouveau period and traditionally carries symbolic associations with good luck, protection and prosperity, adding a charming sentimental meaning to the pendant.
The central compartment was designed to hold a small photograph, miniature portrait or personal keepsake.
The silver back is clearly stamped “ARGENT”, together with a silversmith's mark. An additional hallmark can also be seen on the bail.
